@invaasio had a blast filming

The team and product video combo was showed on Demo Day, and we received a ton of praises how good the video was. Well to let you all know, the time and effort put in the video was enormous! Thank you Henriikka and Tuukka!

The video is going to be on the internet as soon as we get our product out, just hang in there you will see it again! ;)

Sadness

Feels kind of sad to see you all go, but I’m sure we will meet again somewhere… sooner or later.

It was really nice to get to know you all, and for non Startup Sauna readers go check out these…

Awesome startups:

Adduplex - Crosspromoting in Windows Mobile apps(Maybe we’ll use them soon =),

Advacam - Color X-Ray camera developers,

Asqella - Security camera bar none,

Edukoala - Is teaching us languages in not so boring way,

GoalShouter - Be your own judge in football(soccer) games,

Goodbuzz - Modern day grapevine for marketing,

iJudgeFights - Wrong decision by the officials? Do something about it,

infogr.am - Interactive infographics for dummies, you will see a lot of these soon,

Jet Taxi - If you been to russia and used a cab, you know this app is necessary,

Kiitos Technologies - Making internet videos interactive,

Metrify - They will make us all addicted to games,

MNE Creations - Gives us a reason to learn… Play =),

Monsavile - I want a shirt that fits me, don’t you?,

Newergy - Saves us money by adding weather prediction to energy production,

Nordic Hug - A safe, cleaning hug for all our dirty gadgets,

Omyconf - DIgital layer to business events for better interaction,

Presefy - They remove the annoying problem of incompatible tech in presentations,

Wishop - U wish, they show you where to get it,

Zennis - Andre Agassi watch out!

Well it’s all over now… or is it?

I think it was Chris from Ovelin who told us it feels like a handbrake is pulled on after Sauna and it sure feels like it, espesially now when the summer is here.

Well the summer is really here and everything sort of halts here in Finland during the holiday season, and it feels stupid even to try to meet people as every meeting is scheduled weeks away… Maybe we should consider a summer vacation ourselves. =)

Thank You Startup Sauna and all the other teams we miss you!

Eye of the beholder

Design

Couple of Quotes from Wikipedia:

“(noun) a specification of an object, manifested by an agent, intended to accomplish goals, in a particular environment, using a set of primitive components, satisfying a set of requirements, subject to constraints;(verb, transitive) to create a design, in an environment (where the designer operates)[3]”

That is a definition of the noun “design”, here’s another one:

“Design as a noun informally refers to a plan or convention for the construction of an object or a system (as in architectural blueprints, engineering drawing, business process, circuit diagrams and sewing patterns) while “to design” (verb) refers to making this plan.[1] No generally-accepted definition of “design” exists,[2] and the term has different connotations in different fields (see design disciplines below). However, one can also design by directly constructing an object (as in pottery, engineering, management, cowboy coding and graphic design).”

Needless to say, defining design is almost impossible, so how can one even think of accomplishing the act of design itself?

Thanks to Duncan Lamb we are even more confused now. Everyone (sort of) knows good design when they see or use it, but how many of us can really manage to create a good design.

I personally think that design is something that combines form and function and ads a touch of aesthetics to the mix. If we simplify the types of design to just simple and ugly vs. complex and beautiful, it’s not easy to choose even from these two options, and to make things more difficult there is no right or wrong answers.

In real life the paths that we take affect design, right from the start of what-ever-we-are-building, even if we know it or not. In most cases I think that the selections are made unconsciously. And if they really are, how much better products would we have, if the design was made in a conscious way and by a true design professional?

Simplified

Inspired by Duncan Lamb and Ramine Darabiha, we are going to redesign our service right from the core. That means more work for us, but now we have a laser sharp focus on the MVP (Minimum Viable Product, in this case).

When we get the vision that we have online, we have a winner in our hands.

Our customers will tell us eventually if we were right or wrong, and before that there is really no other way of knowing for sure. Although I’m sure they will love it!

The one thing that is sure, is that our team can be really proud of putting some effort to designing something simple and beautiful!

Couple of degrees from apex

Week 2

This week was short but intensive. Mayday and all…

The most memorable events were Aape’s near perfect lecture on persuasion, Juha “The Drill Sergeant” Ruohonen’s shocking truth about VC-Funding and of course the Silicon Valley team announcements!

We were not one of the “lucky” one’s to get on the trip to the promised land, and I must say that the moment probably weren’t optimal for our startup to go to the Valley. This is something I regret not admitting straight forward in todays KTSO session.

We are super happy for our teams who got the chance, and truly hope that something big and wonderful spawns out of the trip, in near future, if not immediately.

Life goes on and I’m personally ready to admit that we are couple degrees from the apex.

Are we live?

Yes we are!

The site is up… and running. Go and check it out immediately!

Never been to a sauna for 1 week before

Soft landing

The first week of #invaasio ‘s #StartupSauna has passed, I am surprised how important our (all of the teams) well being is to these guys, and how much effort they are willing to put in to us!

Never ever have I seen such a commitment made towards us or me personally, and we don’t want to let these people down by not giving our best in return.

We won’t go too deep in to the weeks program besides that it has been super educational, inspiring, demanding (at times) and giving. And other people have covered enough about the Natalie’s super awesome strawberry cook off! :)

Thank You Ville, Antti, Natalie, Mike and Juha and all the other people especially our coaches! You encourage us in our journey, and demand a pace not (yet) normal to us.  =)

Offtopic end quote

When people are going to ask that, if our team will ever break, or if our startup will fail or prevail, I’ll let people know…

…That already 10 years ago

Mikko had the attitude…

…And I knew what the customer wanted!

Heat is on.

And so it begins, the journey that will put us on the map of the World!

#invaasio #startupsauna

…What journey? Will put who on the map?

Ok, perhaps it is time to rewind a little.

Who we are?

We are 2 guys, known each other for years and years.

Mikko (the tech guy) has an intimate relationship with geeky stuff (programming and drinking coke) and me, Ari with little of exposure from pizzas via car mechanics and telecommunication to taxi driving (only short list here), got bored with current situation and decided to go on a startup route.

Not so long ago i gave Mikko a list of 10 ideas with the best potential/ease-to-develop ratio.

And with his engineer-like accuracy Mikko sorted the list out with a point system he developed in seconds according to pain-of-development, time, potential and feel variables. From this carefully analyzed list we then picked one, quite big pain point and started hacking and slashing. (Mikko hacking and me mostly slashing)

The hacking was done in a 200€/month common room, pics below

A casual encounter

After couple of months of hacking and Mikko’s awesome achievements, I went to a SocFri event and there I met these 2 guys, Mikko Alasaarela (Dealmachine) and Ville-Kalle Arponen (Tribe studios), we discussed about tech, their and our services, silicon valley and startup life in general, me bitching how anti-startup country Finland is, and they telling me about this weird thing called Startup Sauna.

Startup Sauna

Startup Sauna they said… I have to look it up.

http://google.com/ -> startup sauna

“Startup Sauna believes seed acceleration should be every great startups’ right. We push the selected startups develop to a stage where they’re ready to take over the international markets.”

(To best of my knowledge, one of the biggest problems of potential startups is probably gaining traction via customer acquisition, basically how to get users to their service.

And that is something where I think startup accelerators shine. In combining startups with potential, so that the media has an easy access to the new companies that have the slight-but-existent possibility to be the next facebooks, googles and dropboxes.

After that it’s the seedtobethenextbigthing’s turn to deliver.)

Perfect, how do we get in?

2 ways, via warmups or referral. We don’t know anybody so it has to be the warmups…

Next ones are going to be after the summer for the next falls batch! %&/#%… it seems like we just missed them all!

We really, really have to find someone to give us a referral!

Luckily few moments and calls later we found a connection. Thanks to Joonas Nurminen and Patrik Louko, we had the chance to apply.

Fill the form, click to send, done.

Egg nyte, got an email from Ville Simola the Captain of Startup Sauna, asking can we come tomorrow to be interviewed. Reply: name the place and time and we will be there.

Tuesday, the interview. We met Ville and Antti Ylimutka and told them about us and our service, they asked some questions and we tried to answer them. I had a feeling this could be something fruitful. These guys really are on to something.

Thursday, received the email:

“What a great day!

Our coaches have gone though your material and they (as well as our team) want you to attend Startup Sauna Final program!”

YeeHaaw, were in!

Let the Journey begin

Program starts 23.4.2012, and that, in case do not know is tomorrow, hence “the journey begins”!

Tomorrow we’ll meet the awesome hackers from around the World!
